JOHN MCDUFF: My tax practice involves controversies, litigation. I get involved with clients when the IRS has taken the position that my client owes more money. And it's my job to reduce the amount of money owed as much as possible, and in some cases, eliminate it entirely.
I've practiced tax for over 30 years. Before I went to law school, I worked as a CPA for a Big Four accounting firm and became a tax attorney as soon as I got out of law school. Being a CPA helps in the tax work because it allows you to anticipate the consequences of a tax position that you might take.
And I bring to bear as well, a high emphasis on quality in my work. I have the highest rating for competence and character by the national rating service, Martindale Hubbell.
Certainly I am analytical when it comes to my clients' tax problems. But you have to be aggressive. And I'm capable of being aggressive in tax matters. Usually handling the IRS and negotiating with them is the best course of action. But what I can do is be aggressive when that's what's called for.
